Heckmondwike 3 Howden Clough b 3

The first game saw us return to last years champions Heckmondwike in what was a tough opening game of the season.
Heckmondwike started the game as expected and scored in the 6th minute when a great ball was played between our defence to their pacy striker and with a one v one situation and a little hesitant Tom Martin in goals he calmly stroked the ball in the bottom right hand corner..
Heckmondwikes 2nd came a few minutes later. A great cross from the right resulted in an excellent finish from the Heckmondwike striker.
This kick started Clough into action and within 5 minutes Alex Nelson headed past the Heckmondwike keeper. With the defence of Banks, White, Blakely and Holt working hard the midfield of Kerracher, Mason, Oates and Maltas started to create more problems and with a great lob from Nelson for his 2nd bought Clough back to 2.2.
Clough were now playing much better though Heckmondwike were still a threat on the counter. And from one of these counter attacks and with a thunderous shot from outside the area scored their 3rd.
Half time came and Anderson was added to Cough's defence to counter Heckmondwikes pace. This worked well and the defence were now well on top. Clough got stronger and stronger as the game progressed and with a great run from Mason and a clumsy tackle from Heckmondwike resulted in a penalty.
David Oates stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to get Clough back on level terms.
Clough were attacking in style now as Mclaren and Kerracher worked hard in midfield. Some excellent defending by Holt and Anderson kept the odd Heckmonwike raid quiet. Chances went begging as Clough created chances to win the game and Martin pulled off a great save as Heckmondwike took advantage of a tiring Clough defence.
The final whistle went and Clough were a little unlucky not to have snatched all 3 points from a very good team.
