Cloughs first game of the season was
a friendly away to Pontefract Sports and with more squad performances like
this should have a good season. Clough dominated the game and took an early
lead from a Redman corner with Scholes heading the ball past a helpless
keeper. Clough went on to double their lead with a free-kick from Campbell
placed in the top corner. Pontefract's keeper did well to keep the score
down but was helpless when a well worked move down the left resulted in a
quality ball into the box from Campbell only for Redick to see his effort
smash against the crossbar. More pressure from Clough resulted in Redick
getting his name on the score sheet to make it three nil before a through
ball from Scholes put Ferry in on goal to make it 4. Redman, Johnston &
Haigh went close in the second half but if was Campbell with a long range
effort to make it 5-0 at the final whistle. Darvill, in goal, had very
little to do the whole game through some solid defending from Ryder,
Scholes, Lord & Blewett in the first half, and this continued after the
break with Morley, Parfaniuk, Rochell & Cooper coming on as substitutes.
Bulmer & Brooke in central midfield had solid games stopping any possible
Pontefract breaks.

Howden Clough 2-5 Walton Wolves
Cloughs first league game of the season, at home
to Walton Wolves, was a marked contrast to last weeks friendly. The flowing
football and dominance that Clough showed was nowhere to be seen as Walton
take a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. Darvill, in goal, MoM, was
helpless to stop any of the long range efforts as they all flew into the
roof of the net and Clough were then struggling to get back into the game.
The Walton keeper wasn't troubled much in the first half other than a solo
effort from Ferry, who came on for an injured Johnston, and was able to
force the Walton defence into putting the ball into their own net. A 5-1
score-line at half time was an accurate reflection of the game but a more
dogged performance from Clough after the break saw Ferry get a consolation
goal following a through ball from Redman with the Walton running out worthy
5-2 winners.

Bretton Juniors 1-0 Howden Clough
Despite having the majority of possession
during the game Clough came away with a 1-0 defeat. The Bretton keeper had
little to do with most of Cloughs efforts on goal being speculative long
range shots from outside their box. A break away goal from Bretton, against
the run of play, half way through the first half was enough to secure the
points for Bretton who never troubled the Clough keeper. Bretton defended
strongly against the Clough strikers and their keeper had very few saves to
make. An absent midfield, lapses in concentration at the back and not enough
pressing play from the Clough forwards meant there wasn't enough goal
scoring chances made and we were unable to make anything of all our
possession.

Howden Clough 3-4 New Lodge.
Clough fell at the first
hurdle in their Cup campaign with a 4-3 home defeat to New Lodge. Clough
dominated the first half and went into the break with a 2-0 lead thanks to
goals from Redman & Johnston. Both goals came from good work down the
flanks, firstly from Redick to cross for Redman and then from Haigh for
Johnston to score from the edge of the box. New Lodge started the 2nd half
the more determined and a ball over the top of the Clough defence saw the
visitors get a goal back. New Lodge equalised, despite an appeal for
off-side, and now with the momentum went on to take a 4-2 lead. Clough kept
going and didn't let their heads drop and with concerted pressure forced a
penalty when Campbell was brought down in the box. Redick converted the spot
kick and despite Clough pressing, were unable to get the equaliser. Resolute
defending in the central midfield area from Bulmer earnt him MoM

Howden Clough 1-3 Yorks Amateurs
Another week and another
cup exit, this time to the hands of Yorkshire Amateurs in the West Riding
County Cup. Clough went 1-0 behind after only 5 minutes despite having the
majority of the possession. Clough continued to dominate the game, with the
wind at their backs, and after continued pressure forced a corner for
Campbell to beat the keeper from the edge of box. Clough maintained the
pressure with solid performances in the middle from Bulmer & Brooke, before
having to be replaced by Ferry with a hamstring injury. Again, against the
run of play, the visitors restored their lead with a short corner and shot
from the edge of the box. Darvill in goal, was helpless with either goal
with ball soaring into the roof of the Clough net. Clough went into the
break confident of being able to get something from the game but playing
against the wind were rarely out of their own half. Scholes (MoM) played
excellently in defence, when Yorkshire did attack, but was unable to stop a
3rd with a close range tap in from a corner.

Howden Clough 2-2 Wrenthorpe
Clough came
away with a 2-2 draw at home to Wrenthorpe Rangers but struggled with
fitness levels and can consider themselves lucky to get a point. A
relatively even first half saw the scores at 0-0 at half time though Redick
and Redman had several chances to break the dead-lock. Clough got the
perfect start after the break when a Redick shot was only half saved by the
keeper for Parfaniuk to tap in from close range. Haigh and Campbell linked
up well in midfield but were unable to keep possession of the ball when it
really mattered. Clough went to sleep after the goal and a long range effort
managed to find it's way under Lord in goal to bring Wrenthorpe back into
the game. More lacklustre defending from Clough saw Wrenthorpe take the lead
and were unlucky not to keep all 3 points but for Parfaniuk getting his
second through good skill on the edge of the box and beating the keeper in
the bottom left corner. Darvill had an excellent game in defence and a well
deserved man of the match.

New Lodge 3-4 Howden Clough
A new year and our first win. Clough ran
out worthy 4-3 winners away to New Lodge on a day when the elements could
have won. Clough started the better and played some excellent football for
the first 20 minutes with Redman & Haigh on the wings proving too quick for
the New Lodge defence. Duffy in goal was rarely troubled with Darvill,
Brooke, Scholes & Blewett forming a solid back line. Bulmer & Lord in
midfield dominated the game and a through ball from Bulmer set up Cloughs
first for Johnston to beat the keeper. Haigh showed some great skill to run
in on goal several times but another through ball from Bulmer set-up Redick
for his first and Cloughs second. A mistake at the back let New Lodge get
one back before half time but Clough still looked comfortable.
For the second half Rochell replaced an
injured Duffy in goal and Cooper came on for Redick up front. Copper hadn’t
been on long before following in a long range effort and when the New Lodge
keeper spilled, Cooper took advantage of an open goal. A corner to the near
post saw Cooper net from close range for his second and Cloughs fourth
before driving rain and bitterly cold winds took their toll on the Clough
team. Tired and cold legs let New Lodge pull 2 back but Clough still
deserved the long awaited win.
Bulmer was a well deserved MoM with a great
performance in midfield working box to box and making some telling through
balls for Cloughs forwards.

Howden Clough away to South Hiendley
Clough earned a hard fought point drawing 1-1
away to South Hiendley. Difficult weather conditions and a non too even
pitch made the game hard for both teams but Clough had the better possession
playing downhill in the first half and a superb left footed strike from
Campbell on the edge of the South Hiendley box sailed into the roof of the
net. Clough dominated the first half with the conditions in their favour but
were unable to take advantage and extend their lead. Bulmer had another good
game in midfield and with Duffy not troubled in goal at all in the first
half, Clough were deserved leaders at the break. The home team then took
advantage of the conditions and equalised with some sloppy Clough defending.
South Hiendley didn't press their advantage and it was Clough who should
have taken the lead through Campbell when through on goal twice.
