League --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Howden Clough Ladies 8 v 0 Bilton Athletic Half Time 4 v 0Howden Clough Ladies completed their first double victory in th North East Regional Womens League with a convincing 8-0 win over Hull based side Bilton Athletic. Clough pressurised early on with Jenna Cooper hitting the post. Biltons offside syle of play started to frustrate Cloughs strikers but on 25 minutes a poor clearance from the visitors enabled Louise Ikin to head the ball through to Emma Rutherford to open the account. >Shortly after Ikin doubled the score after a darting run down the line and cut in to give the keeper little chance. The visitors hit a purple patch and only stout defending from Annie Russell, Kelly Rushforth, Emma Walker and Emma Lafanechere denied them. Clough weathered the storm and increased the lead through Rutherford. Ikins through ball enabled Helen Wagstaff to come from midfied to hit a thunderous strike over the keeper for a 4-0 interval lead. The restart saw Clough start to dictate and Ikin hit three early on to put the game beyond doubt and Rutherford completed her hat trick tucking home a through ball from Wagstaff Player of the game went to Emma Lafanechere who was outstanding throughout. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wigton Moor 1 v 6 Howden Clough Ladies Half Time 1 v 1 The game started off in with driving rain making it difficult for both teams but Clough started the stronger creating several chances but were unable to convert. Against the run of play Wigton broke through the well organised defence to take the lead Clough battled well and through sheer determination with the last kick of the first period Sarah wood hit home from Helen Wagstaffs corner. The restart saw Clough dominate play and Wagstaff’s corner was again influential with central defender Kelly Rushforth heading home to put Clough in front. Clough went further ahead when a free kick just outside the area resulted with Louise Ikin hitting a thunderous strike into the top corner. Clough grabbed a fourth when a short free kick to Jodie Hunter was driven into the area, and Rushforth was on hand to slot the ball pass the advancing keeper. Shortly after Rutherford latched onto a long clearance from defence to put the game beyond doubt and in the dying minutes Wagstaff hit across the keeper to make up the tally. Player of the game went to Lucy Maude with Annie Russell and Leanne Entwistle – Barstow influential. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- North East Regional Women’s Cup Castleford White Rose 1 v 5 Howden Clough Ladies Half time 1 v 2 Clough Ladies reached the quarter finals of the North Eastern Regional Women's League Cup with a convincing 5 – 1 victory over Castleford White Rose. From the start Castleford dominated play launching several strikes but were unable to capitalise due to stout defending from Annie Russell, Kelly Rushworth, Jodie Hunter and player of the game Leanne Entwistle Barstow. It was only a matter of time though before the home side broke the Clough ranks and deservedly took the lead with a solo effort giving the keeper little chance. Clough settled and came more into the game and a short corner from Helen Wagstaff to Hunter saw a penetrating drive into the area converted by Rushforth. Shortly after the best goal of the game was scored when a well worked move from several players resulted with Wagstaff thumping home a long range strike to put Clough in front. Just before the interval Castleford should have levelled the score but a reflex save from Sarah Morton denied them. The restart saw Castleford work hard to take control but Clough’s determination to gain revenge on the only team to beat them in the league this season was paramount and stepped up a gear and a penetrating through ball from Wagstaff found Rutherford who rounded the keeper to fire home. In a last ditch effort the home side increased their arsenal of strikers by going three at the back and with just 20 min remaining a challenge from a home side striker saw keeper Morton having to be withdrawn. Jenna Cooper was introduced and took command of the area well. Clough went on to put the game beyond doubt with Ikin setting up Rutherford and Sarah Wood sending Ikin clear to hit under the oncoming keeper. --------------------------------------------------- Harrogate Railway 0 v 6 Howden Clough Ladies Half Time 0 v 0 Howden Clough Ladies extended their 12 game unbeaten run with a convincing 6 – 0 victory over Harrogate Railway. From the start Clough dominated play and went close with Emma Rutherford and Annie Russell hitting the post. The home side battled well against constant pressure and despite the the influx of chances created it was only a matter of time before the chances were converted and the restart saw Clough settle back to basic’s and a long range strike from player of the game Louise Ikin gave Clough a deserved lead. Shortly after a penetrating corner from Helen Wagstaff saw central defender Kelly Rushforth head home. Harrogate hit a purple patch and searched to pull one back but a well marshalled defence weathered the storm and denied them. Clough again took control when a cross from Sarah Wood was converted by Rutherford. Jodie Hunter and Wagstaff dominated midfield and increased the lead after a superb dummy from hunter made out she was going to get the ball but cleverly let it run on Ikin who made no mistake. Rutherford hit the fifth and Nicki Murray was introduced and with her first touch of the ball met a cross from Ikin to make up the tally. ------------------------------------------------------ Howden Clough Ladies 1 v 1 Ossett Albion Half Time 0 v 1 Clough Ladies remain in top spot despite a 1-1 draw against Ossett Albion From the start Clough started the stronger and a well worked move starting with a long throw from player of the game Louise Ikin to Jodie Hunter set up Nicki Murray who produced a fine save from the keeper. Against the run of play the visitors took the lead when a pass back to the keeper hit a cruel bounce to leave keeper Jenna Cooper helpless as the Ossett striker tucked the ball home. Clough searched in vain for the equaliser and came close when a pin point cross from the right was met by Jodie Hunter whos fearsome strike was well saved by the keeper. Just before the interval Ikin cut in from the right after a solo run and hit the post. The restart saw both teams create chances and stout defending from Claire Kiddle, Leanne Entwhistle-Barstow, Kelly Rushforth and Emma Lafanechere denied the visitors Clough came more into the game with Helen wagstaff and Lucy Maude dominating midfield and in the dying seconds a superbly flighted corner from Wagstaff was headed home by Entwhistle Barstow to give Clough a deserved point -------------------------------------------------- 27/01/08 Manvers 0 v 6 Howden Clough Ladies Half time 0 v 1 Swirling winds proved difficult for both teams as Clough Ladies travelled to Rotherham to face Manvers Ladies in the North East Womens Regional League. From the start both teams started cautiously and Clough gained the advantage after just 5 min when a poor clearance from the keeper saw player of the game Emma Rutherford latch onto the loose ball and tucked under the keeper to give Clough the lead. Midway through the first period Manvers hit a purple patch and were unlucky not to level the score when a superb strike from outside the area hit the bar. Clough continued to be under threat but superb defending from Jodie Hunter, Kelly Rushforth, Leanne Entwistle-Barstow and Claire Kiddle kept them at bay and Keeper Jenna Cooper commanded her area well. The restart saw Clough take control and a superb strike from Helen Wagstaff produced a fine save from the keeper. Clough exerted pressure and deservedly increased the lead when Emma Rutherford broke down the right flank and cut inside to tuck under the oncoming keeper. Kelly Rushforth came close heading against the bar from Wagstaffs corner. Manvers again came more into the game and should have pulled one back but were denied by quick thinking from keeper Jenna Cooper who raced off her line to put the ball out of danger. Rutherford grabbed her hat trick latching on to a fearsome cross from Sarah Wood. The home side lost their fighting spirit and a searching through ball from Lucy Maude saw Rutherford grab her fourth. Rutherford was again instrumental setting up Sarah Wood to hit home to make it five. Clough made up the tally when Kelly Rushforth switched play and set up Rutherford to hit home. Clough remain top of the league and their next game will entertain Bradford University on the 17th Feb in the West Riding County Women's Cup and on the 24th Feb will be travelling to Whitley Bay in the quarter finals of the league cup ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Howden Clough Ladies 14 v 0 Bradford University Clough Ladies marched on to the last eight of the West Riding County Women's cup with a stunning 14-0 victory over Bradford University. From the start Clough dominated play and went close early on when a stunning strike from Sarah Wood shaved the bar. Clough pressure saw player of the game Emma Rutherfords long range effort parried away by the keeper and the rebound fell to Nicki Murray who squandered wide of the post. Helen Wagstaffs penetrating ball found Rutherford who rounded the keeper to open Cloughs account. Clough increased the lead with Louise Ikin heading home from Wagstaffs corner. Bradfords defence started to crumble and Rutherford hit across the oncoming keeper to hit home. Wagstaff and Jodie Hunter dominated midfield and Hunter set up Ikin who's superb effort rattled against the bar. Just before the interval Rutherford completed her hat trick tucking home into the bottom corner. Full credit to Bradford they battled well from the restart and never gave up but their confidence took a blow when a well worked move started from defence by Claire Kiddle found Murray who set up Ikin who made no mistake Rutherford was always a threat and from nothing produced a superb goal. Shortly after Rutherford and Ikin fired home and a pinpoint cross from Kelly Rushforth was met by Rutherford who made no mistake. Sarah Wood set up Kelly Rushforth to hit under the keeper Rushforth came more into the game completing her hat trick and then a 25 yard strike from Helen Wagstaff gave the keeper little chance. Just before the close of play Rushforth broke through to complete the tally. Clough will entertain Harrogate Railway Ladies in the next round ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Howden Clough Ladies 3 v 1 AFC Preston Clough Ladies regained top spot in division 1 of the North East Regional League with a 3-1 victory over last seasons East Riding Premier League winners Hull based, AFC Preston. From the start both teams started cautious trying to pierce the defence but on 25 min a clearance from the keeper found Jodie Hunter who fed the ball to Emma Rutherford to round the keeper to give Clough the lead. Within two minutes of the restart Clough made it two when superb battling by Jenna Cooper set up Sarah Wood to hit home. Preston stepped up play launching several attacks on the Clough defence forcing a corner and reduced the deficit with a well taken header. Both teams set up chances and Prestons keeper kept them in the game. Clough put the game beyond doubt when Helen Wagstaffs corner was headed home by Leanne Entwistle-Barstow. Player of the game went to Kelly Rushforth for an outstanding performance in defence. Clough face a stiff challenge this coming Friday when they take on premier league leaders Morley Spurs in the West Riding Womens County Cup semi final at the County ground kick off 7-30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Howden Clough Ladies 2 v 1 Morley Spurs Half time 1 v 0 Clough Ladies produced a cup upset defeating premier league champions elect Morley Spurs 2-1 in the West Riding Women's County Cup at Fleet Lane Woodlesford. From the start Morley started the stronger and should have taken the lead but outstanding saves from Sarah Morton denied them. Clough started to settle and could have gone one up from Helen Wagstaffs corner but Morley managed to scramble away. Half an hour into the game Clough did take the lead when a searching ball from Stacey Wood found Emma Rutherford inside the area and was brought down by the keeper, the resulting penalty was superbly converted by Wagstaff. Shortly after Nicki Murray went close with a well directed header being cleared off the line. The restart saw Clough pressure the opponents defence and got their reward after a fine move involving Wagstaff and Kelly Rushforth set up Rutherford to hit home. Morley came more into the game but stout defending from Claire Kiddle, Stacey Wood, Leanne Entwistle-Barstow and Jodie Hunter kept them at bay Clough again took control and Sarah Wood was unlucky just failing to connect in front of goal from a penetrating cross. Morley to their credit battled well and pulled one back after splitting the defence with a well timed through ball. This charged up Morley and were unlucky not to equalise when a superb strike hit the bar late on. Clough managed to hang on to earn a plum final tie against Leeds United Ladies at West Riding County F.A on 23rd April kick off 7-30 ------------------------------------------ Sheffield F.C 3 v 5 Howden Clough Ladies Clough Ladies went into this game knowing that a defeat would mean Sheffield taking the title leaving Clough runners up. Sheffield started the stronger creating several chances but Clough managed to weather the storm and came more into the game. Against the run of play Clough could have taken the lead when a superb lay off from Helen Wagstaff enabled Gemma Howell to set up Sarah Wood who hit just wide. Clough eventually did take the lead when Jodie Hunter brought the class="border-shadow"ball out of defence from a Sheffield corner and found Wood on the right who hit a superb cross for Emma Rutherford to head home. Howell then won the ball in midfield and lobbed the ball over the defence for Louise Ikin who chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper to double the score. Clough made it three when Hunter’s throw to Howell saw her place the ball through the narrowest of gaps to find Rutherford who hit the top of the net after a smart turn. Sheffield were running out of ideas but managed to pull one back from a low cross that was deflected under the keeper. Howell was again influential laying the ball out wide to Wood who hit a superb cross into the area for Rutherford to complete her hat-trick Just before the interval Clough made it five when a fumble from the keeper saw Rutherford latch onto the loose ball for a tap in. Clough knew Sheffield would be firing with all cylinders in the second period and a goalmouth scramble saw them pull one back. This lifted Sheffield and after constant pressure pulled back two goals to make it 5-3. Clough dug in deep and superb defending from Claire Kiddle, Kelly Rushforth, Leanne Entwistle-Barstow, Jodie Hunter plus a commanding display from keeper Sarah Morton ensured victory. Clough go top of the North East Regional League one point clear of Sheffield. Clough have two games to play and Sheffield have three. --------------------------------------- Howden Clough Ladies 1 v 1 Keighley Ladies Clough went on to their last game of the season last Tuesday knowing that victory would put them level on top with Sheffield F.C but would loose out on a far superior goal difference for promotion into the premier league on their first attempt since been promoted into the North East Regional Women's League. Clough started the better creating several chances and broke the deadlock on ten minutes when Emma Rutherford broke down the right and crossed the ball for Louise Ikin to head home. Gemma Howells superb through ball saw Sarah Woods strike tipped onto the post by the keeper and Rutherford hit the rebound just over the bar. Clough dominated but failed to capitalize on chances created and then against the run of play Keighley equalized after a superb run down the right cut inside and hit over the advancing keeper. The visitors hit a purple patch and only stout defending denied them and then in the closing minutes Kelly Rushforth pushed forward and hit the post
