CLOUGH WIN SEMI (28 Jan)
Calderdale Cup Semi - Final
Howden Clough Girls marched on to the cup final with a sudden death penalty shoot out
victory over Hopwood Girls.
This close encounter saw the home side exert early pressure but a well worked counter
attack saw Clough break and Hayley Holt thumped the ball into the bottom corner.
Clough were still celebrating as Hopwood kicked off and grabbed an equalizer.
The restart saw Hopwood pressure Cloughs defence who held out well but Hopwood took
the lead midway through the half.
Clough never stopped battling and were unlucky hitting the cross bar and post, but
a last minute strike from Helen Wagstaff somehow squeezed a way past the keeper grabbing
the equalizer.
Extra time saw both teams cancel each other out with neither team managing to score
the "golden goal".
Penalty shoot out all square, sudden death saw Emma Rutherford sending the keeper
the wrong way and Clough keeper Victoria Larkin making a stunning save to put Clough into
the final on 1st April.

Clough took the lead just before the interval but it took a fine individual effort from
Helen Wagstaff to break the deadlock.

and increased their lead with Hayley Holt latching onto a defensive error.
Holt made it three after good work from Emma Rutherford giving Clough breathing space, but

0-1 Bradford City
The words "You weren't meant to score " ran true as Clough Girls lost out to
Brad City 1-0.
Cloughs Hayley Holt and Helen Wagstaff got the better of midfield, creating chances and
striker Heidi Halloran working hard latching onto every loose ball plus the piercing runs
from full back Emma Rutherford should have given Clough a comfortable interval lead but
the net seemed forbidden territory.
Second period - Cloughs keeper Victoria Larkin made an impressive save and stout defending
from Kirsty Glyde , Helen Blakeley , Natalie Gray and Sara Whitehead weathered a brief
City storm. Just as a draw seemed to be on the cards Clough were dealt the unkindest of
blows scoring an own goal from a city corner to give Bradford the victory.
Howden Clough

superb and keeper Victoria Larkin was always ALERT.
When called on both Heidi Halloran and Natalie Gray played well in defence.
Rothwell
Town Girls 2-2 Howden Clough Girls Clough Girls lack of match practice clearly showed as they made a slow start,
finding themselves two down at the interval to a sharper Rothwell Town , this could have
been more but for keeper Victoria Larkin making two superb saves.
The restart saw Clough a lot sharper stringing several good moves together and pulled a
goal back through a hard working Helen Wagstaff.
Cloughs confidence grew after intense pressure on the Rothwell goal grabbed a well earned
equaliser from Hayley Holt.
To their credit Clough searched for a winner but were denied by the cross bar in the last
few seconds.
Howden
Clough Girls 2-0 Hebden Royd (3/12/00) Clough Girls completed their first double of the season over Hebden Royd
2-0
Clough started well and early into the game a good kick from keeper Victoria Larkin
found Emma Rutherford who struck a fierce shot passed the oncoming keeper.
Hebdens determination launched several raids on the Clough goal but were thwarted
by an impressive Helen Blakeley in central defence and keeper Victoria Larkin in fine
form.
At the restart Hebden continued to press but then Clough took over and started to
dominate play with Helen Wagstaff as hard working as ever.
Late on Hayley Holt ran full length and hit a superb cross for debut girl Sara
Ellis to tap in, ensuring Clough remain top of the league. Girl News West Yorks Schools have recently held trials to form a representative team

Girls 3 - 3 Hopwood The two leaders of their respective divisions met in an inter-league game
and drew 3-3.
Cloughs slow start enabled Hopwood to exert early pressure hitting the woodwork and
forcing the Clough defence into their own area.
The visitors took the lead midway through the half before Clough turned the game
round to equalise through Helen Wagstaff. Both teams were well matched making several
chances but were unable to break down good defensive play going into the interval all
square.
The re-start saw Clough the better side with Helen Wagstaff completing her
hat-trick to take a 3-1 lead but good teams never give up and Hopwood clawed their way
back with two late goals to make the final score 3-3.
Howden Clough

from Helen Wagstaff resulted with Emma Rutherford opening Cloughs account with a tap in.

placed header.

heading the ball home
Shortly after a well placed effort from Helen Wagstaff enabled Holt to grab the
winner from a rebounded off the keeper after saving well.
The re-start saw Lightcliffe launch several strikes at the Clough goal but could
not convert their chances.
Clough dug in well determined to protect their lead and were unfortunate not to
increase it after well worked counter attacks.
Lepton 2-2 Howden Clough Girls Clough girls could only manage to draw against a strong Lepton side.
Clough played their second game of the weekend attempting to catch up lost games
which showed early on as a long clearance from the Lepton keeper enabled her team mate to
tuck the ball home giving Clough keeper little chance.
Clough stepped up a gear and a superb left foot volley from Heidi Halloran levelled
the score.
Shortly after the restart a good run from Emma Rutherford resulted with Clough
taking the lead through Hayley Holt.
